In the past few weeks there have a number of of royal events. The Queen’s Garden Party is always a pleasure to attend. It is a great opportunity to stroll around in the beautiful garden, meet colleagues and have tea and delicious cakes.
The day after there was the State Opening of Parliament where the Queen’s speech was delivered. The Queen’s speech is the public statement of the Government’s legislative programme for Parliament’s next working year.
Then yesterday I attended the Trooping of the Colour to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. This military ceremony dates back to the early eighteenth century or earlier, “when the colours (flags) of the battalion were carried (or ‘trooped’) down the ranks so that they could be seen and recognised by the soldiers.” There are very many layers to this ceremony and every year I notice something that I hadn’t noticed before.
